Welcome to Whitechapel, the gateway to the East End. On the edge of the biggest financial centre in the world, you'll find the lingering ghosts of Dickensian London. Of course, much has changed since the days of Oliver Twist, Jack the Ripper and the Elephant Man, but one thing remains the same - a Cockney lad on a street corner selling tubs of jellied eels (yes, slippery fishy things boiled in jelly) to a colorful cast of regular customers. It's just the first stop of many on this tasty tour of London's wild east.
From jellied eels to deep-fried jelebis, here's east London's history in approximately eight courses
London's street food scene has exploded into life. On this tour we might eat Cockney fare, Bangladeshi snacks, Jewish food, Vietnamese treats, London's best burgers and some posh nibbles. The itinerary will vary from week to week, but there will be at least seven food stops, and you won't go home hungry. That's a guarantee.
All food is included. Coffee and beer are at your own expense.
It's not all gluttony - we'll talk about the East End's unique social and political history, its street art, music scene, bookshops and galleries.
Lots and lots and lots and lots of great food (and unlike most food tours, I pay full-price for everything). And if you're not in a rush to disappear afterwards, we'll go to a fantastic east London brewery for a pint.
I'm a journalist who's written numerous articles about London street food, as well as restaurant reviews for Time Out. I've got plenty of insider tips on off-the-beaten-path places to eat and drink in London I'd love to share.
Please note: the Saturday and Sunday tours are different. Saturdays are better suited to people who already know East London fairly well, while Sundays are a perfect introduction to the area. It's best to send me a message before booking because I sometimes travel for work at weekends - these tours can only happen when I'm around!
Hello! I'm a native Londoner, a journalist and editor, and a restaurant critic. I'm massively proud of my hometown and it's a thrill to be able to share my favourite London places with you. I've authored travel guides for Lonely Planet and Time Out, and write for the magazines of Google, United Airlines, EasyJet and Eurostar, among others. I'm also an editor at the Slow Journalism magazine, Delayed Gratification. For me, Vayable is an extension of my journalism. It's a chance to tell stories, about me, my city and the people I share it with. And it's a chance to hear your stories about your travels and your home. I made a speech about social travel at a conference in Denmark, which you can read here: http://seismonaut.com/blog/2013/12/2/traditionelle-turismevirksomheder-skal-laere-at-taenke-socialt/ My tours have been blogged about here: http://theveryhungrylondoner.com/2014/05/06/a-street-food-tour-of-east-london http://noapathyallowed.com/2014/04/east-london-street-food-tour I'm @LondonFoodTours on Twitter Full profile
