Surrounded by the three lakes, reshaped during history as defensive bulwarks, Mantua rises almost magically from those waters. The relationship between Mantova and water is a very close one: the river Mincio, the lakes and the mediaeval canal called "Rio" are part of the Mantuan traditions and of the local culture. The hydraulic settlement of the city, designed in 1190 by Alberto Pitentino, provided four lakes: the fourth was dried up in the second half of the 18th century. With this walking tour in the city centre and a short cruise on Mantua's lakes you will discover how water and earth are unexpectedly interwoven.
