Day tour of Lantau Island.
Lantau Island is the largest island of Hong Kong, yet it has a fairly small population. The only major town is Tung Chung, otherwise there are small villages scattered all over the place.
This tour will take you to see the main sights of Lantau Island, which include:
• Ngong Ping, with the famous Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery amongst its major sights.
• Tai O, an authentic fishing village that is famous for its stilt houses and dried seafood. It is home to some ancient temples, and the Chinese Pink Dolphin is commonly seen in the nearby waters.
• Mui Wo, an old settlement that used to be a major transport hub for all traffic in and out of Lantau. Sights here include the Silvermine Cave, the Silvermine Waterfall, the Man Mo Temple, and the Silvermine
Beach.
From Mui Wo we take a ferry back to Central, a scenic tour passing by Peng Chau island and part of Victoria Harbour.
Leaving your hotel at about 9:00 we take taxi or MTR to Tung Chung, where we take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car up to Ngong Ping village, for a tour of the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and surrounding area (cable car opens 10:00 on weekdays, 09:00 on sat/sun/PH).
The twenty-minute cable car ride gives a beautiful 360° view of the mountains of Lantau Island, Tung Chung town and Hong Kong airport.
The Big Buddha is the world's largest bronze sitting buddha statue at over 20m in height.
Next stop is Tai O fishing village, famous for its stilt houses. It is home to several ancient temples. We take a tour around the village and visit the temples, finishing with a 20-minute boat tour of the village and the nearby waters, where the Chinese pink dolphins live.
We then have a seafood lunch in Tai O, after which we catch a taxi to Mui Wo, a 30-minute scenic ride along the southern shores to the other end of Lantau Island.
There we take a walking tour of Mui Wo village and surroundings (takes 1 1/2 - 2 hours), we visit a. o. the Silvermine Waterfall and the Man Mo Temple.
We take a fast ferry back to Central, returning to your hotel around 18:00.
Note: transport cost (taxi, cable car, ferry), food and drinks are not included in tour price.
I am a Dutch national living in Hong Kong for over a decade. I have much experience roaming the great outdoors, and know many of the best places first hand. The more I walk around the countryside, the more I am hooked to the beauty, and the more little gems I uncover. I hope to share this experience with foreign visitors, giving them a much broader and deeper experience of Hong Kong. Over the past decade I have been hiking around the countryside almost every weekend and holiday. There are few places that I have not visited at least once, many routes are familiar to me. Being involved in the local hiking and geocaching community has also given me a lot of in depth background information on what is out there, including details about local history, folklore and geology.
