Hike to Ancient Hidden Glacier

Get up in to the heart of the majestic Mt Aspiring National park, used as a core location in the 'Lord Of The Rings' and 'The Hobbit' trilogies.
This 3-4 hour return walk will take you through rugged valleys and right up and under the hanging Rob Roy glacier. An amazing walk and described as one of the best in NZ.
Mid morning I will pick you up from your accommodation in my 4x4 truck and we will make our way out to the trail, passing through a deep fiord carved by ancient glaciers. Waterfalls cascade down from the mountains, entering the bright blue glacial river that winds down to Lake Wanaka.
During the 1 hour drive head around Lake Wanaka stopping at a few of the best photo taking opportunities and crossing a few streams as we wind our way deep into the Mutukituki river valley until we make it to the beginning of the trail.
The walk begins through a flat river valley and tussock plains, surrounded by sheep and beef cattle. We then cross elevated swing bridge over the main river as we begin the steady climb into the mountain range along side a raging river fed by the melting glacier.
Once at the glacier you will be greeted by 4 separate faces hanging above as well as multiple raging waterfalls fed by the glacier melting. Here we will rest and take in the view, have some light lunch and learn about the history of the area and the glacier itself.
The total walking distance is 10km return with a total walking time of between 3-4 hours, however we make several stops both during the trail and a lunch break at the glacier face.
This trip is meant for any adventurous traveller looking to get some the most out of the Wanaka, is suitable for all ages and a moderate level of fitness is required.
This is one of the greatest short walks in New Zealand and the view defiantly compensates for the effort!
