Details

The first restaurant I ever went to was Kreutz Market in Lockhart, Texas at one-month of age. I may have been too young to sample the wares that time, but appreciation of Texas BBQ runs in my blood.

Lockhart is the seat of BBQ in Texas, though its tradition has seeped into Austin over the years. The city of Lockhart covers about 10 square miles, provides a home for 12,000 people, and can claim four or five BBQ institutions of great importance; the density is astounding.

This tour will take you through the history of BBQ in Central Texas, getting you acquainted with the historical figures and modern marvels that keep the industry going today. I will outline the history, menus, and legends of several joints, and you get to pick which ones we sample. This tour is best done in the morning--the best cuts of meat are sold by lunch.
