Become an Urban Beekeeper
Bees are quintessential New Yorkers: busy, vibrant, buzzing with energy. There are a lot of them here—a sweet aspect of the sweeping movement in NYC towards urban farming, local food sourcing and artisanal production. Andrew Coté, founder of Andrew’s Honey and the New York City Beekeepers Association, has been at the forefront of the bee buzz in NYC since 2006. When he’s not tending his hives of Italian honey bees all over New York City or teaching people in the developing world to beekeep through his nonprofit Bees Without Borders, Andrew spends most Mondays and Wednesdays at the Union Square Greenmarket selling his luxe honeys. You can get in on the buzz by taking a class or visiting one of the many hives located on rooftops and community gardens throughout New York City.
