Reviews for Queens Tastes of the World

I really enjoyed this tour. All the food we tried was really great and there was such a big variety. I ate so many things I have never had before or would even think to order. Jeff was clearly very knowledgeable/well researched about the area and food - he also seemed to know everyone in the neighborhood! Make sure you bring a big appetite because you will sample a lot of food!

Brilliant tour. The area of Queens where our tour took place is fascinating; MANY different cultures very tightly packed together. Jeff took us to places which we would never have found and would have found quite inaccessible. I really liked his style of asking the vendors about the foods and ordering off the cuff depending what we wanted to try. This wasn't a 'sit over there, your food will arrive' tour. This was more like 'right, here we are, this is an Ecuadorian bakery, it does great fried rice, shall we try some?'. We were always up at the counter with Jeff which was great. The places we visited weren't fixed; in fact there were loads we just dipped into unplanned; like a halal food truck with some amazing marinated meat and an elderly lady selling fresh tamales out of a steam bucket! It made the tour really exciting and it was nice to not know exactly where we were going. We tried LOTS of food; far more stops than any other food tour I've ever done. Particular highlights were watching momos get made in a tiny Tibetan kitchen, eating Nepalese thali in the tiniest food court in the world, an amazing shrimp cocktail made from a little stand in the back of a Mexican convenience store and an incredible Ecuadorian desert. Jeff obviously loves the area and has a huge depth of knowledge about the food and the people. His stories made the whole tour very interesting and he gave us a great recommendation for a craft beer bar afterwards; that was great Jeff the Maine Mo pale ale was awesome. All in all, superb, would HIGHLY recommend...best food tour we've ever done and we've done a few both in the US and in the Far East.

Had a great time with Jeff and also with the group. The places Jeff picked were real treasures with awesome food and interesting people. My favorite was a guy named Nacho from Mexico City. He can do magic with fish. Would definately recommend Jeff's tour to anyone who wants to have a special experience in New York.

Jeff is amazing. For three years I have taken advantage of Jeff's broad base of knowledge and connections on a Jackson Heights food tour. I lead a experiential learning project on culture with 7-12 graders from the Renaissance Charter School, every year. The students learn so much from Jeff. He is good with kids, personable, and knows all of the owners of the restaurants we go to. He can even pronounce all of the difficult names of the foods! I highly recommend that you participate in this food tour if you are looking to try amazing foods you have never heard of!

Thanks, Jeff, for this great and unique experience: it's such a very special way to discover the Queens. And the opportunity of meeting people in NYC, and a very nice person (you, the guide).

What a great time! Jeff loves Queens, he is an avid student of all cultures. The proprietors love to see Jeff as he is so inquisitive. The food was fantastic, the best we had in NYC. I would go back again just to experience more places with Jeff. Believe me, you could never find all these places yourself, many of them are very small, and some on a lower level, not very evident from the street. Just book this tour!

How can I review if I have never been!

Jeff's Tour was one of our highlights of a one week trip to NYC. For us, both of us visiting from Germany, it was a very different, authentic and yummilicious experience. My friend had been to NYC many times before but had never done anything similar in NYC. Jeff is very knowledgeable and can tell great stories about Queens, at the same time he is very interested in a cultural exchange with all the tour participants. In terms of culinary experience we had eight different tastings of what Queens has to offer. As a special bonus and because we were on a Monday tour we got a glimpse into a local yellow cab driving school lesson which was hilarious and eye opening at the same time. All in all I'd thoroughly recommend Jeff's tour. Thumbs up!

This was a fun tour around a neighborhood that our group of 7 ladies had never visited. We sampled 8 different cuisines and talked with the restaurant owners. We even got to go in one kitchen to watch the preparation of one of the dishes. It was great fun and we were very full by the end of the tour.and learned something about the different cultures. The pizza place was owned and run by an Albanian! I would recommend this tour for adventurous people who like to try different flavors.

Jeff is well versed in the block by block diversity of Jackson. Heights, Queens. Prior to the walk, he inquires about any dietary restrictions. This was important to me as a vegetarian and he is very accommodating. I would recommend the tour to anyone who wants to explore this neighborhood.

Sounds very good

We had a great time on the tastes of the world tour with Jeff. He was so enthusiastic about Queens and all of the culinary delights That were on offer. We have travelled to a lot of different places and Jeff still managed to surprise us with all of his tiny restaurant recommendations in the area. Certainly something very different if you enjoy trying different and sometimes unusual foods.

Jeff's knowledge of the restaurants around Jackson Heights is impeccable and our small group enjoyed what he selected for us to try. We ate small bites from eight different parts of the world, including the Philippines, Colombia, Tibet, Nepal, and Bangladesh. I'm a New Yorker and the two others live in Missouri, and we all ate tasty things we never had before. Definitely worth the time!

This was one of the first things we did on our first trip to New York, and I would recommend that everybody do the same. If immigration is to key to NYC's history, then here is a place where you can experience first-hand that ongoing process which must make the city - and particularly Queens - one of the most culturally-rich places on the planet. Jeff will give you accounts of Jackson Heights's various communities and their interactions as you work your way round, but the real discovery is in the eating. We ate Tibetan momos, Nepali roti, quesadillas with "corn truffle", an incredibly rich pandebono, a weird viscous Peruvian drink called Emoliente, superb Grandma's pizza, meat and rice from the halal truck that won Jeff's 2010 'Halalathon' competition, and so on. As testament to how open-ended the trip felt, Jeff also took us to a place he'd never visited before, an Ecuadorian bakery where we tried empanada and quimbolito. Of course, you could just wander round Queens yourself and gamble, but you'd have to be well-connected to know that, for instance, the best momos in the neighbourhood are hidden away in the back of a defunct phone shop. For all Jeff's knowledge and affability, this felt like really good value.
